WEL Networks – Western Network Upgrade Project
Following the Te Uku Wind Park project, which was granted consent in November 2008 (see previous Bulletins), Simon Berry and Jen Vella represented WEL Networks in relation to a notice of requirement (“NOR”) for the proposed Western Network Upgrade Project (“WNUP”), the purpose of which is to link the Te Uku Wind Park to the electricity grid as well as providing better security of supply to the western Waikato region.
The NOR was heard by independent commissioner, Mr David Hill on behalf of the Waikato District Council in March 2009. Commissioner Hill recommended that the NOR be confirmed, subject to conditions, which WEL Networks accepted. No appeals were lodged. To read relevant press clippings, click here.
WEL has entered into a commercial deal by which Meridian Energy is carrying out the Te Uku project with WEL responsible for the electricity infrastructure and lines which, alongside Transpower, will enable that power to be distributed. Construction of the Te Uku Wind Park and the WNUP has now commenced. To read more, or keep up to date with progress, visit the Te Uku Wind Park website by clicking here.
Simon's comment: It is significant that the necessary approvals for the WNUP were obtained promptly and without delay, so that renewable energy from the Te Uku Wind Park can be supplied to homes and businesses in Raglan and surrounding areas within the next couple of years. Electricity supply to Raglan will also be shored up in order to cope with the rapid expansion of the western Waikato. This project represents another example where extensive stakeholder consultation and good planning has avoided the need for an Environment Court hearing.
