BAY OF PLENTY REGIONAL COUNCIL – ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS GROUP – TRUSTPOWER MATAHINA DAM
Simon Berry and Jen Vella are acting for the Environmental Hazards Group (EHG) of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (BOPRC) in relation to an application by Trustpower for resource consents for the ongoing operation of the Matahina Hydroelectric Power Scheme. Trustpower seeks to increase its ability to “peak” in order to meet demand for electricity throughout the day.
The EHG is responsible for maintaining the Rangitaiki-Tarawera River Scheme, which is largely funded by the landowners, to protect their land and infrastructure on the lower Rangitaiki River from flooding. The EHG submitted on Trustpower’s application because it is concerned that the fluctuations in river levels as a result of the peaking will have adverse effects on the ability of the River Scheme to protect landowners from flooding.
The Trustpower applications are being heard by independent Commissioners appointed by the BOPRC. The hearing was adjourned in July and resumes on 12 October 2011
