Borman Road Substation authorisation secured – March 2008

Simon’s team also assisted WEL Networks Ltd, (WEL) in securing the designation needed to authorise the establishment and operation of a new zone substation at Borman Road, Hamilton. The substation is urgently needed to maintain security of supply in the face of burgeoning growth in the northern part of Hamilton, and needs to be located in a residential area. There was significant local opposition based on concerns about visual amenity, health effects of electro magnetic fields and effects on property values. Hamilton City Council recommended that the designation be approved subject to appropriate conditions and WEL accepted the recommendations. Despite the local opposition, no appeals were filed so there will be no disruptions to supply next winter.

Simon's comments: WEL made a massive effort to ensure that the substation resembled a residential dwelling as much as possible and evidence also showed that there was no need for concern in relation to health and safety issues. We were very pleased that no appeals were lodged because it was important that the authorisations be obtained right away to avoid disruptions to electricity supply in 2009.
