Lakes Water Quality Society Symposium – August 2008

The Lakes Water Quality Symposium was held in Rotorua on 12-13 August 2008. This important conference had an impressive line-up of speakers, among them the Minister for the Environment and overseas contributors, considering issues relevant to water quality, including the adequacy or otherwise of the recently notified proposed National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management. The conference attracted over 200 delegates from all over New Zealand. Simon presented a paper entitled “Nutrient Sensitive Zones – Diffuse Pollution – Section 30 of the Resource Management Act 1991”, which examined the provisions of the RMA relevant to dealing with regulation and control of non-point source discharges, and included a case study of the history and operation of the Waikato Regional Council's Lake Taupo Variation (RPV5) (see the item on this topic in Recent Highlights).
